How To Choose Outdoor Cushions
At Cush Living, we believe outdoor living areas should be as luxurious and inviting as indoor spaces. We strive to help our clients create comfortable living quarters that look amazing and require little maintenance.
Here are a few important things to consider when choosing outdoor cushions:
- Inner/core material – If your outdoor cushions are going to be directly exposed to sunlight and changing temperature and moisture conditions, it’s best to use foam designed for outdoor use, such as Dri-Fast®, a polyurethane foam that allows moisture to drain through for quick drying.
- Cover material – If you’re creating a brand-new outdoor space or don’t have a specific vision in mind (or even if you do), our expert design team will guide you on choosing textures, patterns, and colors for your custom cushions for outdoor furniture to help you achieve your desired look.
- Frequency of use – If your custom cushions will receive heavy use (e.g., in commercial settings), it’s important to choose cushion materials that are durable, hold their shape, and resist stains, mold, and mildew.
Our expert team will work closely with you to choose the best materials for your project, based on your goals and design preferences.
How To Take Measurements
Taking precise measurements is essential to ensure your custom cushions/covers fit perfectly. Here’s how to take accurate measurements:
How do I take measurements of my cushions?
Please check the “How To Take Measurements” section above to see our guide on how to take measurements for your sofa, chair, chaise lounge, or ottoman cushions.
What core material should I choose for my cushion replacements?
Outdoor cushions should be filled with a material that is made to weather the elements. One of the most popular options is Dri-Fast®, a polyurethane foam designed for outdoor use.
Cushion filler material comes in a variety of densities, from soft to very firm. Our team will work with you to determine the best filler option for your situation and preferences.
What material should I choose for my outdoor cushion covers?
For outdoor cushions, choose a cover material specifically designed to withstand exposure to the elements and resist fading, mold, and mildew.
Sunbrella® is an excellent choice. The company offers hundreds of different fabric designs, and their products are durable and long-lasting. We also work with other top-quality brands, including Perennials®, Schumacher, Thibaut, and Maria Flora.
How long does it take to make custom cushions?
Our team works hard to deliver your custom cushions as quickly as possible—without sacrificing quality. Your cushions and pillows are handcrafted in our expansive 30,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Dallas, which has one of the largest production capacities in North Texas.
Turnaround times for smaller residential projects are approximately 6-8 weeks depending on the fabric availability. For example, recovering a set of 4-6 chairs for a backyard dining table might take 4 weeks. Larger commercial projects (for a hotel or restaurant, for example) may take anywhere from 12-16 weeks.
We also specialize in high-volume contract cutting and sewing for a range of textile-related products. Call us to inquire about project timelines.
What is the difference between waterproof and water-resistant?
Water-resistant material is tightly woven, making it hard for water to get through; but some moisture can still penetrate the surface.
Waterproof material, on the other hand, provides a complete barrier to water. If you live in a damp region or an area that gets a lot of rain, waterproof fabric is the best choice.
How should I take care of my new cushions?
Outdoor fabrics are almost always specially treated to resist water, UV rays, mold, and mildew. This doesn’t make the fabrics indestructible, but there are things you can do to extend the life of your new cushions.
In the warmer months, consider installing a sunshade over a seating area to protect your cushions from UV rays and fading. Store your cushions when not in use to protect them from the damaging effects of the sun.
Also store your cushions in the winter when not in use to protect them from wind, rain, snow, and ice. If your cushions get wet, shake them out as soon as possible and let them dry completely.
Cleaning outdoor cushions is easy. First, remove any surface debris. Next, wash with mild soap and water and allow the cushions to dry completely.
